Orthopedic Surgeon,
Foot and Ankle Specialist
Jacob Markel, M.D. is a fellowship-trained orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon. He treats any and all disorders of the ankle and foot ranging from pediatric conditions and sports-related pathology in young athletes, to arthritis and progressive forefoot, midfoot, and hindfoot deformity in the middle-aged and elderly populations. He has a particular interest in lower-extremity trauma, total ankle replacement, flatfoot reconstruction, bunion correction, and sports injuries. Dr. Markel embraces a team-oriented approach to patient care. He readily employs the expertise of other physicians/surgeons, therapists, social workers, and case managers to develop and execute a patient-specific treatment plan, such that each patient may take an active role in the management of their pathology.
Dr. Markel was born and raised in Ann Arbor, MI. He attended the University of Michigan where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Germanic Languages and Literatures. He earned his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine. He completed his residency training in Louisville, KY at one of the busiest urban trauma centers in the nation, where he earned multiple research awards and was recognized by his peers as ‘Resident Teacher of the Year’ as a chief resident. He then completed his fellowship training in Grand Rapids, MI at the Grand Rapids Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Fellowship under the tutelage of Donald Bohay and John Anderson – two pillars of the field, whom Dr. Markel considers two of his closest confidants and mentors.
Dr. Markel remains deeply involved in orthopedic research and education. He has authored several book chapters and manuscripts and regularly presents at local, regional, and national conferences. He is currently a reviewer for Foot and Ankle International and serves on the Young Physicians Committee of the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society.
Outside of work, Dr. Markel is a die-hard Michigan and Detroit sports fan, holding season tickets to the Michigan Football and Hockey games – Go Blue! He enjoys golfing, outdoor winter sports, and spending as much time as possible with his family on Sturgeon Bay in Northern Michigan. Dr. Markel is excited and grateful to return home to Southeast Michigan with his wife Avery, originally of Royal Oak, and their two young children.
