David C. Markel, MD, FAOA is a Board-Certified, fellowship-trained and nationally recognized orthopedic surgeon, researcher, and educator. He cares for patients with hip and knee pain using both operative and non-operative approaches, performing primary and revision hip and knee replacements and managing complex cases, including failed or poorly performing replacements and infections.

He completed a Hip and Knee Reconstruction fellowship and served as a Junior Attending Surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery, Weill Cornell Medical College. He also studied orthopedic traumatology as an AO International Trauma Fellow in Bochum, Germany. He earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, completed an orthopedic surgery residency and general surgery internship, and holds a bachelor’s degree from Kalamazoo College.

Dr. Markel is the Medical Director for the Orthopedic Surgery service line and was Section Chief at Henry Ford-Providence Hospitals in Southfield and Novi for 20 years. He is an Examiner for The American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons, past American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery (AAOS) Leadership Fellow and Member of the AAOS Board of Councilors, he has been a member of the Board and past Chair of the research committee for the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), serves as second Vice President of the Mid-America Orthopaedic Association, was a two time Past- President and current Board Member for the Michigan Orthopedic Society. He has been inducted into several exclusive societies, including The Knee Society, The Hip Society and the American Orthopaedic Association.

Dr. Markel is very active in residency training and orthopaedic research. He is the Program Director of the Henry Ford-Providence Orthopedic Surgery Residency program and directs the research efforts in the orthopedic basic science laboratory. He is a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Wayne State University and Michigan State University, and an Adjunct Professor in Bioengineering at Wayne State University. He has published more than 150 scientific manuscripts. He routinely lectures locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. He has received funding from several sources including a OREF program development grant, a new investigator grant, a VA research grant, an AAHKS research grant, an ASES grant and several resident development grants from the Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation and has won two Knee Society Awards for research.

Dr. Markel was born in and lives in Ann Arbor with Stacy, his wife of 37 years, and their two goldens, two cats and two horses. He is a loyal die-hard Michigan fan. They have 4 adult children and have been blessed with 4 grandchildren (6 mo-4 yrs) which has been a joy.
