Dr. Bak has been a highly regarded orthopedic surgeon in Metro Detroit since 2005. A native of Dearborn, he was recruited to Wayne State University as a baseball player. While injuries interrupted his baseball career, he went on to graduate from Wayne State University School of Medicine with high distinction and Alpha Omega Alpha academic honors. He returned to his home state after getting extensive orthopedic experience at one of the highest-volume orthopedic residencies in the country and then honed his skills at the prestigious Charles S. Neer fellowship at Columbia University. During fellowship, he trained under some of the most renowned surgeons in the country and gained extensive experience in complex sports injuries of the shoulder, elbow and knee.
Dr. Bak is a board-certified in both Orthopedic Surgery and subspecialty certified in Orthopedic Sports Medicine. In addition to extensive experience with athletic injuries in all joints, his fellowship focused on acute and chronic injuries of the shoulder, elbow and knee. Additionally, Dr. Bak is one of only several surgeons in the state with formal training in complex shoulder reconstruction and sees patients from throughout Michigan and the Midwest with unusual shoulder dysfunction. He has been recognized by his peers as a Top Doc in Hour Detroit Magazine multiple times.
He has served as the Team Physician for Novi High School, Madonna University, Cleary University as well as an independent consultant for professional athletes. He recognizes the need for elite athletes to return to an elite level of performance as quickly as possible and uses both nonsurgical and surgical techniques where appropriate to help them achieve a full recovery.
He has authored several book chapters on shoulder surgery and published multiple research articles on sports medicine in highly respected journals. He also serves as a reviewer for the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery and Orthopedics. He previously served as President of the Detroit Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, Chair of Orthopedics for St. John Providence Health System and on the Board of Novi Bone and Joint Surgery Center. Additionally he has served in several leadership positions on the national level for Orthopedic Surgery for Ascension Health.
Dr. Bak believes in open communication between patients and physician to determine the appropriate plan for each patient based on their needs and functional and athletic activities. His priority is to make sure that your questions are answered and your needs addressed through a thorough exam and discussion of problems and treatment options whether they are straightforward or complex.
